South Area 20

In the Middle Ages, it is thought that Kambayashi was included in the area called Hayashi Go. Hayashi Go is the area where the powerful lord of the Hayashi Clan established his base in the late 12th century.
In 1352, Genyu Okuwa, a Jito (medieval land steward) of the area did not donate rice required for ceremonies to Hakusangu Shrine (current Shirayama Hime Shrine). The shrine priest went to Genyu's residence to exact punishment; however, he was killed. Upset, disciples at Hakusangu Shrine set fire to the area, leaving nothing but a portable shrine behind. Even Genyu could do nothing about the sacred portable shrine, and had no choice but to apologize. The story was passed down in the area. However, the location of Genyu's residence is still unknown.
Kambayashi became a part of Nonoichi Town in 1955.
