Doko, a priest at Shogoin Temple in Kyoto and leader of Yamabushi (Buddhist priests practicing asceticism in the mountains), composed a poem when he passed Nonoichi Village in 1486. This stone monument is inscribed with the poem.
Written in the poem is that even though wind started blowing in a rainbow-filled sky, and rain started falling, people in Nonoichi Village kept working hard. This poem notes that there was a flourishing market at which people gathered in Nonoichi.
