According to historical documents, Shodaiji Temple was established in 1331 by Shukaku, the son of Shakunyo, the 5th chief priest of Honganji Temple. There is also a document stating that Gyojo, the great-grandson of Shukaku, became the chief priest of the temple in 1509.
After the aggressors in the Ikko Ikki (uprising of Ikko sect followers) were defeated, Hideyoshi Toyotomi assigned Junnyo to serve as head of Honganji Temple in 1593. A historical document regarding the assignment mentions Eisho, a priest of Shodaiji Temple. In addition, there is a letter of thanks from Kenson (Kenson Shonin Shosoku), a priest of Koshoji Temple in Kyoto. When Honganji Temple was separated into the Higashi and Nishi Honganji Temples in 1602, Shodaiji Temple joined the Jodo-shinshu Sect Otani School, whose main temple was Higashi Honganji. In 1617, Higashi Honganji Temple gave Shodaiji Temple permission to display a wooden Buddha statue. In 1630, Higashi Honganji Temple gave Ryosho, a priest of Shodaiji Temple, a picture of Kyonyo wearing sacred clothes.
Shodaiji Temple was the only temple belonging to the Jodo-shinshu Sect in Nonoichi in the Edo Period (1603-1868).
