The area name, Horiuchi, appeared in the Tenbun Nikki (Tenbun Diary) written by Shonyo, the 10th chief abbot of the Honganji Temple, in the 16th century. Landholders' residences were often surrounded by moats at that time. Horiuchi means "within a moat" and the area name is thought to have come from this.
Horiuchi was merged into Nonoichi Town in 1956.
Meiji Hachiman Shrine is thought to have been built in 717, when the priest Taicho climbed Mt. Hakusan. Sugawara Shrine to the east of the village and Hachiman Shrine in Tanoshiri were also incorporated into this shrine in 1907.
Sugawara Shrine has a large Japanese cedar tree. It has been said that the Kitamaebune (the northern marine transport system) used the tree as a marker.
