Shimobayashi was related to the Hayashi Clan that ruled the area. The name Shimobayashi is found in a historical document written in the 14th century.
Shimobayashi became a part of Nonoichi Town in 1955.
Yakushi Hiyoshi Shrine, thought to have been built in the later 16th century, protects this area.
Long ago, people found a hot spring spot on the premises of the shrine. Residents of the village valued this hot spring and drank its water as medicine. One day, it is said, someone washed dirty clothes in the hot spring's water. Being angered by this, the shrine's God stopped the water. This is the folktale, "Kusuriyu no Ike (Medicinal Hot Spring), handed down in this area.
